Our story

The gold in the granite

Au is two things at once: the abbreviation for Australia, and the periodic symbol for gold. Both are deliberate. We make equipment for one kind of country, and we only make the version of a thing we would be content to own for ten years.

The country

Old rock, hard weather

The Australian Alps are not the Himalaya and they are not the Alps. They are older than both. The granite of the Main Range has been standing for something in the order of four hundred million years, worn down rather than thrown up, scoured by ice and wind until what is left is bone, tor and wind-twisted snow gum.

None of it looks serious from the car park. All of it is serious once you are on it. Weather crosses the range in under an hour. Whiteout arrives without much of an introduction. The rock is coarse enough to take the skin off a rope sheath in a season, and the distances are long enough that a bad decision at eleven in the morning is still with you at nine that night.

That is the brief we design to. Not the summit photo — the eleven hours either side of it.

How it started

A bad night on the Main Range

Summit Au began in [year], after [founder name] spent a night sitting out a whiteout in equipment that had been sold as “more than adequate”. It was adequate right up until it was not. The shell wetted out before midnight. A harness buckle iced solid. A head torch rated for eight hours gave up at two in the morning.

Nobody was hurt. That was luck, not equipment — and the difference between those two things is the entire reason this company exists.

We started in [city] a year later with a single harness and one rule that has not moved since: publish the numbers, or do not sell the thing.

What we promise

Four rules we do not bend

01Buy it once

One harness that lasts a decade beats three that last three years. Every product is specified to its failure mode, not to a price point.

02Certified, not claimed

Every load-bearing item carries EN and UIAA certification and we publish the rated strengths on the product page. No numbers, no sale.

03Tested where it is sold

Prototypes go out into the Main Range, Mount Buffalo, the Grampians, Arapiles and the Blue Mountains before anything reaches production.

04Repaired, not replaced

Send it back and we will fix what can be fixed and tell you honestly when it cannot. Retirement advice is part of the product.

And what we do not do

A deliberately small range

There is no seasonal colourway programme. There is no line built to hit a discount price. We would rather carry nine things that are right than ninety that are available.

When we cannot make a category better than what already exists, we do not enter it — we would rather point you at the competitor that got it right. That is a strange thing for a shop to say and we mean it.

Acknowledgement of Country

Summit Au operates on the lands of the [Traditional Owner groups]. We acknowledge their continuing connection to country, waters and community, and pay respect to Elders past and present. The high country we test in has been walked, known and cared for for tens of thousands of years before any of our gear went near it.
